In Memory of David P. May Sr.
To Our Dear K2K Families,
It is with a tremendous sense of loss we announce the passing of David P. May Sr., who founded Kids to Kids with his daughter Mackenzie. Dave’s vision for our program was so much bigger than the small swim mentoring program he began at the local YMCA on a Saturday morning. The success and impact from that small group tidalwaved into the current K2K programming that includes Tae Kwon Do, Yoga, Running, Golf, Art, Theater, among others.
Dave’s tireless work to include special needs kids into recreational activities to develop their social, interpersonal, gross motor and lifelong skills has created a legacy of community service. Not only was Dave passionate about developing the ‘whole’ special needs child, he also knew building this community would support the parents/families of these children. He quickly also realized the impact to the teen mentors – the development of their understanding, acceptance and leadership continues to be impressive.
To many of us, Dave was more than a smiling face we would see at K2K programming. He was an advocate, a resource, and an unwavering mentor. Dave claimed that he was not “in charge” of K2K, it was our mentors who had what he called “the fire in the belly”. While that is true, for many of us, Dave was the flame that lit the fire, and the kindling that helped it grow. The impact of his work is immeasurable, and his legacy will carry on in the kids, mentors, and everyone who ever had the chance to know him.
As we transition duties and details, we will continue to provide the same quality programming we have always offered. We will be relying on our Board Members and Trustees to carry some responsibilities and will warmly accept additional help from past mentors and graduates of our program to give back some of what K2K provided through the years.
We look forward to celebrating the life and legacy of our fearless leader soon; details will be announced at a later date. Thank you to all of you who have participated in K2K. Time spent in this community has always proved the good in humanity.
